Most leather patches are simple: laser engraved leather stitched onto a velcro backing. They look good, but they aren’t always built with tactical functionality in mind.
A recent custom project for Black Crow Solutions gave us the opportunity to change that.
This build combines genuine vegetable-tanned leather, laser engraving, Cordura-style construction, and infrared (IR) backing to create a tactical leather patch visible under night vision goggles (NVGs).
The result is a patch that is both visually striking and operationally functional.
A Different Kind of Tactical Leather Patch
For this project, the customer wanted something that stood apart from standard leather morale patches.
Instead of a traditional engraved leather square, these patches were laser cut into a Cordura-style tactical patch profile. This gives the patch a more rugged and structured appearance while maintaining the natural character of leather.
The leather used in this build is genuine vegetable-tanned leather dyed deep red. Vegetable-tanned leather engraves extremely clean under the laser and develops character as it ages, making every patch slightly unique.
The laser engraving process creates sharp detail and deep contrast, allowing logos and designs to stand out clearly against the leather surface.
Built With IR Backing for Night Vision Visibility
What truly makes these patches unique is what’s underneath.
Instead of a standard backing, these patches are backed with infrared reflective (IR) material and sewn to hook Velcro.
This means the patch appears subtle in daylight, but becomes visible under night-vision goggles (NVGs). For units operating in low-light environments, IR identification patches can be critical.
The combination gives you:
