Every once in a while a custom order comes through the shop that instantly stands out.
This build started with something you don’t see every day in a patch: real python skin. Not embossed leather or printed texture, but actual hide with natural scale patterns that make every piece unique.
Starting with the Raw Hide
This is how the python skin arrived before any preparation or cutting. Natural materials like this always have their own personality. The scale patterns change across the hide, and different sections produce slightly different visual results once they become part of a patch.
That natural variation is exactly what makes builds like this so interesting.
Preparing the Skin in the Laser Optics
Once the hide is selected, it is prepared with adhesive and placed in the laser cutter. Using the camera optics in the machine, we can see the exact placement of the material on the cutting bed and position the design precisely.
This step allows us to choose the most visually interesting areas of the hide while also making the best possible use of the material.
Cut Parts Before Assembly
Once the layout is dialed in, the python skin and supporting layers are cut. At this stage you can see all of the individual materials before the patch is assembled.
The design combines the python skin with a unique glitter vinyl layer and an infrared outline, creating a layered build that balances natural material with functional elements.
Wrapping the Skin Around the Backing
During assembly, the python skin is wrapped around the patch backing. This is where the material really starts to show its character.
Because of the structure of the scales, the edges lift slightly when folded over the backing instead of laying perfectly flat. That creates extra texture and depth around the edge of the patch and makes each piece look a little different.
The Finished Patch
The final result is a custom patch made from real python skin paired with glitter vinyl and an infrared outline. In daylight the natural texture of the hide and the subtle shimmer of the vinyl give the patch a distinctive look.
Under night vision, the IR outline becomes visible, adding a functional element without sacrificing the design.
Because each section of the hide is different, no two finished patches are exactly the same.
If you have an idea for a custom patch that pushes the envelope, we’re always up for a challenge.
